Oyo State Emergency Management Agency has raised a flood warning for residents of Ibadan, especially those in Akinyele, Egbeda, and Oluyole Local Government Areas, as heavy rainfall is expected within 24 hours.

The alert was issued on Friday by the agency’s Administrative Secretary, Ojuolape Busari, through a statement released by the State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade. The agency urged residents to act quickly and take precautions to avoid possible disaster.

According to the forecast from the Flood Early Warning System, significant rainfall is likely to hit parts of the state, especially areas around the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), the Ibadan airport, and the Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria. These locations, spread across the three local governments, are expected to receive more than 100mm of rain — enough to cause dangerous flash floods.

The agency explained that the warning is part of a wider effort in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources to protect lives and property. Communities are being encouraged to clear drainage systems, avoid dumping waste into water channels, and prepare for emergency evacuation if needed.
Residents were also cautioned about the likelihood of streets and low-lying areas becoming quickly submerged. The risk of cars stalling in water and roads becoming impassable remains high. Commuters have been advised to stay indoors during the downpour and to avoid attempting to drive or walk through flooded areas.
The government also called on local authorities to remain alert and mobilize quickly if the rainfall worsens. People living in flood-prone zones are advised to stay updated on weather reports and be ready to relocate to safer ground if necessary.
This warning follows recent weather patterns showing increased rainfall in parts of Nigeria. With the rainy season in full swing, Oyo State officials are urging residents not to wait for disaster before taking action.
