A senior figure in the Peoples Democratic Party has launched a sharp attack on Peter Obi, questioning his approach to leadership and planning as opposition politics begins to take shape ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The comments came from Segun Showunmi, a former PDP governorship candidate in Ogun State, during a television interview focused on opposition strategy.

Showunmi argued that the PDP has lost influence in several regions and now relies heavily on the South, leaving Peter Obi as its strongest option.

He claimed Obi lacks a clear route to victory and faulted his past decisions to leave established political platforms, saying this weakened his long-term political structure.
He also raised doubts about Obi’s ability to compete within major parties, pointing to experienced figures who already understand how to win primaries.
According to Showunmi, power blocs within these parties are not easily pushed aside, and political energy alone cannot replace deep organisation and strategy.
While acknowledging the enthusiasm Obi attracted in the last election, Showunmi said popularity without structure is not enough.
He added that the South-East’s political strength is no longer centred on one individual, noting that new leaders and power centres are emerging as the 2027 contest draws closer.
