The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has outlined Abuja’s Smart City Vision, anchored on five key pillars — Urban Mobility, Sustainability, Public Safety, Digital Governance, and Economic Empowerment.

Speaking at the 2025 Asia Pacific Cities Summit and Mayors’ Forum in Dubai, Wike said the FCT is investing strategically to position Abuja as a world-class smart city while promoting citizen-focused development.

He explained that the city’s transformation plan includes partnerships with international agencies and private firms. These include a smart water metering project with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Chinese-backed intelligent traffic lights, and initiatives like the Abuja City Walk and Abuja Industrial Park.

According to him, these projects reflect Abuja’s growing commitment to innovation through public-private partnerships and global collaboration.
Earlier, Wike met with the UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation, Reem bint Ebrahim Al Hashimy, to discuss expanding bilateral cooperation.

In a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications, Lere Olayinka, the minister said Abuja’s smart city vision aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and focuses on practical solutions for residents.
He explained that urban mobility will involve the expansion of transport networks and intelligent traffic systems to reduce congestion, while sustainability will focus on renewable energy and waste-to-wealth projects.
Public safety, he said, will be strengthened through smart solar streetlights, CCTV coverage, and rapid emergency response systems. Digital governance efforts will include the FCT Call Centre and a digitised land registry to enhance transparency and efficiency.
Wike added that economic empowerment is central to the agenda, with plans to attract tech companies and create jobs in Abuja’s expanding digital sector.
He also highlighted ongoing plans for a National Employment Database to match skills with jobs and support youth entrepreneurship through the Abuja Enterprise Agency.
Wike concluded that Abuja’s transformation goes beyond technology, describing it as a people-focused initiative aimed at creating “a safer, more inclusive, and prosperous city for all.”
